CLIFFORD ELLIS: The founding of Bath Academy of Art at Corsham Court

Monday 4 November 2019

Clifford Ellis (1907-1985) and his wife Rosemary worked as partners, designing posters and book jackets.

Clifford was also Head of Bath School of Art, which moved to Corsham Court after the Bath Blitz of April 1942 and was renamed Bath Academy of Art. The horrific aftermath of the bombing in Bath was recorded in Rosemary Ellis’s diary. Jon Benington will illustrate many of the gems of the Ellis Family Archive that was given to the Victoria Art Gallery in 2016. This includes prints and watercolours by Howard Hodgkin and William Scott, letters from Peter Lanyon and Walter Sickert, and book cover artwork for the iconic Collins New Naturalists series.
